Discovering that a child has a learning disability can be frightening for parents, but it is important to take the necessary steps to support your child and promote his or her success in learning. Continue reading to learn how you can help after your child has been diagnosed with a learning disability:
Find Out More about the Condition
Complete independent research to learn all that you can about your child’s learning disability. You can find a wealth of information on the Internet, but be sure to also utilize your library’s resources and check out academic studies. Learning more about your child’s learning disability will enable you to take the right steps and find the correct tools to help your child learn.
Keep Things in Perspective
Remember that a learning disability is not a prediction of failure. Learning disabilities are obstacles that require work to get past, but your child can manage his or her condition with the right support. Work to keep yourself from becoming discouraged so that your child can do the same.
Communicate with Your Child’s Teachers
Establish an active line of communication with your child’s instructors. This will allow you to stay current on your child’s developments and ensure that your child is being supported in his or her learning. Talking regularly with your child’s teachers can also ensure that your child’s classroom instruction and supplemental learning programs are working in harmony to improve your child’s learning.
Become an Advocate and Leader for Your Child
If you feel that your child is not receiving the educational support that he or she needs, it is your responsibility to advocate for your child. Be sure to learn about your child’s rights to special services. It is important, however, to remember that your child will follow your lead, so you should approach a learning disability with optimism and determination.
