September 8 was first designated as International Literacy Day by UNESCO in 1965.
This year’s International Literacy Day is dedicated to “The Power of People: Start a Literacy Movement.”
You can make your own contribution to literacy by getting your kids interested in a project they can do themselves.
How about building your own library?
This is a simple idea that appeals to a lot of people. "Take a book, return a book." You can already find Little Libraries in San Francisco. Why not build one for your neighborhood?
Here's an explanation of the "Little Free Library" idea:
- how to create one of your own
- what you'll need
- how to find books
- how to keep your project going
A project like this will reward you and your kids with fun and a lasting sense that books and reading matter!
