If you've ever wondered why writing skills matter, remember the Declaration of Independence.
The Declaration of Independence is the document written 238 years ago that declared our independence as a nation! In 1776, a Continental Congress was created to draft a statement of the colonists' intention to be independent from Britain, but Thomas Jefferson alone ended up with the "thankless" task of writing this Declaration. He did the best job he could in a day or two and presented his work to the Continental Congress. Like most writers, he felt resentful as he watched them "mangle" his writing. When they had finished, he synthesized their ideas with his and wrote a revision. This draft became one of the most revered documents in the United States.
You can find lots of books about the Declaration of Independence in the SF Public Library and bookstores. Reading about this famous piece of writing might inspire you to create some memorable writing of your own.
