Be a Reading Role Model

Last updated 4 years ago

Your child looks up to you as a parent, seeking guidance, advice, and learning the right ways to behave. As a parent, it is your responsibility to provide a good example to your child in many facets of life. Reading can bring your children lifelong pleasure, so it is important to instill in them a love of learning and a curiosity about the world. Keep reading to find out how you can become a reading role model for your child.

Read Together

One of the best ways to be a reading role model is to invite your child to read with you. Your child loves spending time with you anyway, so you can make the most out of your time together by sharing a book. Take turns reading to each other out loud, and you’ll both be able to enjoy the reading experience that much more.

Make Your Home Book-Friendly

When your child sees reading material around the house on a regular basis, he or she will come to think of it as a normal and positive part of everyday life. Make use of your bookshelves and fill them with a variety of books that will appeal to kids and adults. Newspapers and magazines can help your child learn to love to read, as well. The next time you encounter an article about something that might be of interest to your child, such as baseball or movies, you might try introducing it to your child.

Bring a Book With You

Anytime you go somewhere with your child, make a point to bring some reading material along. Your child will see that reading is not something to be dreaded, but rather something that is enjoyable and rewarding no matter where you are.
