The Importance of Developing Effective Reading Skills

Last updated 6 years ago

It can be argued that there are few things more important to a child's success than a solid education including math, reading, and writing skills. Too often a child may have some difficulty reading or suffer from learning disabilities, making it difficult to keep up with their classmates.

The importance of solid reading skills extends beyond a simple need for language comprehension—reading can act like exercises for the brain.

Reading tutoring or a literacy program can help your child realize the skills often associated with writing:

  • Reading improves your overall skill set. An avid reader has better skills for comprehending, analyzing, understanding, responding to, and learning from what they read.
  • Language comprehension provides a base for all other areas of study. Without strong reading skills, it can be hard for a student to excel in any area of study. Better reading skills can lead to improved speech pronunciation and phonemic awareness.
  • Reading ability can affect a child's self-esteem. As a student in a classroom of children who can read, being unable to read or suffering from a learning disability may lead your son or daughter to doubt themselves and compare themselves to others. In reality some children just learn in different ways, but the child may view this in a negative way.
  • Reading may help to develop future relationships. Children that read well often communicate well. A lack of literacy can hinder a child's ability to make friends and build relationships.

Children who have difficulty reading or a learning disability may need extra tutoring, especially one on one tutoring, or a different teaching method such as a multi-sensory program.

If your child needs a little extra help with reading or has a learning disability, a reading specialist may be able to help. Let us work with you and your child to help them achieve their full potential through an individualized literacy program and one-to-one reading tutoring.
